Cylinder or rotary

A cylinder mower gives the tightest cut and the strongest stripes, and suits a club pitch cut two or three times a week. A rotary or a rotary-deck ride-on copes better with longer or wet grass and costs less to keep sharp, which suits schools and councils looking after several pitches. Many grounds use both through the year.

Aerators and renovation kit

Compaction in the goalmouths and down the centre is what ruins a pitch by midwinter. On a used aerator, ask what tines come with it, the working depth, and the condition of the crank bearings and drive. On scarifiers and overseeders, check the blades or discs for wear. Tractor-mounted kit needs a tractor with the right PTO and linkage category, so confirm both before you buy.

Compact tractors

A compact tractor on turf tyres runs the aerator, sweeper, top dresser and trailer. Check the hours, the condition of the PTO and three-point linkage, the hydraulics and any loader, and that the tyres are turf pattern rather than ag.

Buying from a dealer

Every seller here is an approved UK dealer, checked against Companies House or HMRC before they can list. Dealers usually service and set up a machine before delivery, can often take a part exchange, and should tell you plainly whether the price is plus VAT. We never take payment ourselves: you deal with the dealer directly.

Questions

What machinery do I need to look after a football pitch?
A mower that suits how often you cut, an aerator to relieve compaction through the season, and a spreader for feed. For end-of-season renovation, a scarifier, an overseeder and a top dresser, which many clubs hire or share. A compact tractor runs most of the larger kit.
Can I get machinery delivered to my ground?
Most dealers deliver, either with their own transport or through a haulier, and many will set up and demonstrate the machine on arrival. Ask the dealer for a delivered price when you enquire.
Are prices shown plus VAT?
Each listing says whether its price is plus VAT, includes VAT, or has no VAT to add. Search and price filters compare prices excluding VAT, so plus-VAT and VAT-inclusive listings sort fairly against each other.
Can I get an alert when a machine I want is listed?
Yes. Search for what you need, for example aerators or John Deere compact tractors, and save the search. We email you when a matching machine is listed.
