Buying used cylinder mowers
Cylinder mowers cut with a scissor action between a rotating reel and a fixed bedknife, giving the clean, even finish needed on fine turf. They range from pedestrian mowers for greens and squares to triplex and five-unit ride-ons for tees, surrounds and fairways.
The cutting units are the heart of the machine. Check cylinder and bedknife wear, how many blades the reel has for the finish you need, and whether the units have been ground or backlapped recently. On ride-ons, check engine hours, service history and hydraulic hoses and motors for leaks.
Common makes include Toro, John Deere, Jacobsen, Ransomes, Baroness, Dennis and Allett. Use the year and engine hours filters to compare machines, then contact the dealer directly.
