Buying used top dressers
Top-dressers spread sand and dressing evenly over greens, tees and pitches. Pedestrian and small drop-style machines suit greens and squares, while larger spinner-style units mounted on a utility vehicle or tractor cover fairways and pitches.
Sand is abrasive, so check the hopper, conveyor belt, brush and spinners for wear and damage. Look at the belt tracking, rollers and bearings, and any hydraulic drive for leaks. Ask whether the machine has been washed out after use, as damp sand left in the hopper causes corrosion.
Make sure a mounted unit suits your utility vehicle or tractor before you buy. Common makes include Toro and SISIS. Filter by year and ask the dealer about recent belt or brush replacement.
