Buying used scarifiers
Scarifiers and verticutters cut vertically into the turf to remove thatch and moss and thin out lateral growth. Options range from pedestrian scarifiers and verticut cassettes for pedestrian mowers to tractor-mounted units for pitches and fairways.
The blades are the main wearing part, so check their length, spacing and condition, and ask whether spares are included. Check the reel bearings, the depth adjustment and the drive belts. On tractor-mounted scarifiers, look at the gearbox and PTO shaft. On pedestrian machines, check the engine and clutch.
Tungsten-tipped blades last longer on sandy rootzones. Common makes include SISIS, Redexim and Billy Goat, with scarifier cassettes available for Allett and Dennis pedestrian mowers. Filter by year and ask the dealer about blade condition.
