Buying used aerators
Aerators relieve compaction and improve drainage, and range from pedestrian machines for greens to tractor-mounted deep tine units for fairways and pitches. Hollow tines remove cores, while solid and slit tines open the surface with less disruption.
Check the tine holders and tines for wear, as tines are consumables and get replaced regularly. Look at the crank arms, bearings and linkages for play, and on tractor-mounted units check the gearbox, PTO shaft and depth settings. On self-propelled pedestrian machines, check engine hours and the drive.
Match a tractor-mounted aerator to your tractor's horsepower and linkage. Common makes include Toro, John Deere, Redexim, Charterhouse, Wiedenmann, SISIS and Billy Goat. Filter by year and ask the dealer what tines come with the machine.
